Description
Each sachet (21.8 g) contains: Sodium Chloride 2.60 g, Potassium Chloride 1.50 g, Sodium Citrate 2.90 g, Anhydrous Glucose 13.50 g, Excipients q.s.
Action
Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics: The central principle of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is the utilization of sodium-glucose co-transport in the small intestine, a phenomenon which remains largely unaffected during acute infectious diarrhoea. The key constituents of ORS are sodium and glucose. The central principle of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) is the utilization of sodium-glucose co-transport in the small intestine, a phenomenon which remains largely unaffected during acute infectious diarrhoea. Thus the success of ORT is largely dependent on glucose-driven sodium absorption (transcellular route) leading to passive absorption of water by the paracellular route. The clinical result is usually rapid rehydration and correction of acidosis.
Indications/Uses
The preparation is recommended in the treatment of acute infectious diarrhoea, enteral fluid therapy in ITU patients, rehydration of the patient with burns, fluid and electrolyte balance in the surgical patient and dehydration in the elderly.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Oral rehydration solutions are used for oral replacement of electrolytes and fluids in patients with dehydration particularly that associated with acute diarrhoea of various etiologies. The dosage of oral rehydration solutions should be tailored to the individual based on bodyweight and the stage and severity of the condition. The initial aim of treatment is to rehydrate the patient, and, subsequently, to maintain hydration by replacing any further loss due to continuing diarrhea and vomiting and normal losses from respiration, sweating, and urination. For adults, 200 to 400 ml of oral rehydration solution for every loose motion has been suggested. The dosage for children is 200 ml for every loose motion, and for infants is 1 to 1.5 times their usual feed volume. Normal feeding can continue after the initial fluid deficit has been corrected. Breast feeding should continue between administrations of oral rehydration solution.
Directions For Use: Dissolve the contents of one sachet in one litre of drinking water preferably boiled and cooled. Use only in recommended dilution. Use the prepared solution within 24 hours.
Mode of Administration: For Oral administration use only.
Overdosage
No information is available on overdosage & treatment of overdosage with oral rehydration solution.
Contraindications
The preparation Is contraindicated in patients with dehydration of 10% or more and continued vomiting.
Warnings
Oral Rehydration solutions are not appropriate for patients with gastro-intestinal obstruction, oliguric or anuric failure, or when parenteral rehydration therapy is Indicated as in severe dehydration or intractable vomiting.
Special Precautions
Oral Rehydration salts should be reconstituted only with water and at the volume stated. Fresh drinking water is generally appropriate, but freshly boiled and cooled water is preferred when the solution is for infants. The solution should not be boiled after it is prepared. Other ingredients such as sugar should not be added. Unused solution should be stored in a refrigerator and discarded 24 hours after preparation.
Use In Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no special problems with this group.
Side Effects
Vomiting can occur after administration of oral rehydration solution, and may be an indication that it was administered too quickly. If vomiting occurs, administration should be halted for 10 minutes then resumed in smaller, more frequent amounts. The risk of hypernatraemia or overhydration after administration of oral rehydration solutions is low in patients with normal renal function. Overdosage of oral rehydration solutions in patients with renal impairment may lead to hypernatraemia and hyperkalaemia.
Drug Interactions
No drug interactions have been described for Oral Rehydration solution.
